Can You Buy an IB IA? An Honest Answer From IB Teachers and Examiners

Let’s start with the seller.

Suppose you find someone online who promises to write a high-scoring IA for you. They tell you it will be original. Perhaps they even promise that it will pass plagiarism checks.

How do you know?

You usually don’t.

Think about the practical side of this business. A person claiming to write a large number of IAs, EEs, and TOK essays has to produce an enormous amount of work. Writing even one strong assessment takes time. It requires research, planning, subject knowledge and careful writing.

So where does all this work come from?

One possibility is recycled material. Old student work can be found online. Material can be copied, adapted, or poorly paraphrased. Sometimes the similarities remain obvious. Sometimes they do not.

AI creates another uncertainty. Someone may produce work quickly using AI and sell it as if they had personally researched and written it. That does not make the authorship problem disappear.

Imagine that you buy an IA. It looks original. Your teacher reviews it and sees no obvious plagiarism. The quality appears good.

You feel safe.

But suppose the seller has given substantially the same IA to another student living somewhere else.

Neither of you knows.

The first student submits it through their school. Later, you submit yours. Suddenly, work that looked completely safe can raise a serious authenticity problem because similar or identical work already exists in the assessment system.

And the timing can make things worse.

You may discover the problem close to the final deadline, when there is no realistic time left to research and create a genuine IA from scratch.

There is another situation students may not consider before paying someone.

Suppose the service provider has written the IA and taken your money. You submit the draft to your teacher at school. The teacher reviews it and gives you comments. They ask you to improve certain parts before the final submission.

Now you need to make those changes.

So you try to contact the person who wrote the IA.

But they have disappeared.

They have already taken the money. Perhaps they no longer respond to your messages. Perhaps the service itself has disappeared. You are now left with a document that you did not write and comments that you do not know how to address.

And that creates a very practical problem.

Your teacher may say that the analysis needs improvement. They may ask you to strengthen the research, reconsider a method, or explain your conclusion more clearly.

But how do you improve work when you were not involved in creating it?

You may not understand why the writer made certain decisions. You may not know how they found the sources. You may have no idea how to revise one section without damaging another.

At that point, contacting another service provider does not necessarily solve the problem either. They were not involved in the original work.

Now, let’s give the seller the benefit of the doubt.

Forget recycled work. Forget poor paraphrasing. Forget AI.

Suppose you find someone genuinely brilliant.

They understand the subject. They research your topic properly. They write an original IA. They sell it only to you. The work is excellent and could receive a very high score.

Have you solved the problem?

No.

Because your teacher already knows you.

They know how you perform in class. They have seen your previous work. They have some idea of your strengths and weaknesses.

Then you suddenly produce a sophisticated IA.

A good teacher may have questions.

• Why did you choose this research question?
• How did you find these sources?
• Why did you choose this method?
• What happened when your first approach failed?
• Why did you use this mathematical tool?
• How did you reach this conclusion?
• What does this part of your analysis actually mean?

This is where many students make a mistake in their thinking.

They believe the IA is the finished document.

It is not.

The document is only the final result of a process. There were decisions behind it. There were rejected ideas. There may have been calculations that did not work. There were reasons for choosing one approach over another.

Someone who created the work can discuss that journey.

Someone who bought it may know what the document says. That is very different.

You can memorize a conclusion. But what happens when the teacher asks why you reached it?

This is why finding a “better” writer does not solve the real issue.

The IB’s academic-integrity rules also address work obtained from or produced by a third party. Serious cases can result in no grade in the affected subject and put the student’s Diploma result at risk, depending on the circumstances and the decision made.

So the question is not simply, “Will Turnitin find plagiarism?”

This is the part many students miss.

The alternative to buying an IA is not struggling alone.

You can ask for help.

In fact, students often need help. IA work can be difficult. A research question can go wrong. A method may not work. You may have analyzed the data but still not know what to say about it.
