How To Start The New School Year Brightly: Tips for IBDP Students

It’s essential to understand the structure of the IB Diploma program at the very first stage of the new year. This two-year program offers six subject groups along with the core components.

Each component is essential for the final assessment. If students do not have good planning and a positive mindset, they might feel the workload. So, it’s necessary to have good strategies to cope with the syllabus from the start.

DP1 & DP2 (Diploma Programme Year 1&2)– The first year of the IB Diploma program is also known as DP 1. The main focus of this year is to provide strong foundational knowledge about the subjects. Students become curious learners and explore the topics given in their coursework. They do research work for extended essays (EE)and TOK (theory of knowledge). They also began participating in creative activity and service (CAS). All these core components are an essential part of the IB Diploma program.

The final year of the IB Diploma program is also known as DP 2. This year, students submit their Extended essays and TOK essays. They also complete internal assessments of all the subjects and prepare for the final exams.

Get organized from day one– Students of DP 1 feel the workload of multiple subjects, teachers, and assignments. This workload can be reduced or managed when you are well-organised. You should remember the following essential points in the first month of your DP 1.

• Always track the deadline of the assignments and the time limits for preparing the projects and internal assessments.

• You should have separate folders for each subject. Make a habit of keeping things ready and well-prepared on your laptop.

• If the projects are time-consuming and very large, you can break them into small parts. You will not feel the burden of your work.

Develop time management skills– Time management is a big challenge for IB students. For this, you need to remember the difference between urgent and essential. If you start to take things seriously from the very first day, you will not feel the burden. Make a timetable for your study and include revisions of extra-curricular activities, physical activities, and rest. Do not waste your extra time doing foolish things. You should have proper rest when you are not studying or playing.

IB encourages students to develop strong conceptual knowledge and a curious attitude towards learning. You cannot only revise the topics and appear in exams. You should be very careful and remember the following important points-

1. Give more importance to understanding than memorizing things. You should not hesitate to ask your teacher questions and clear up doubts.

2. You should be curious and discuss the assessment pattern and expected exam questions with your friends and teacher.

3. Be a critical thinker and collect extra study material. It will help you significantly in writing essays and TOK.

4. You can check the previous year’s question papers to check the level of exams and the types of questions.

Extended essays are an essential part of the core components. It benefits the students of year 1 that it is not expected to finish EE in the first year. So, you can explore the topics and prepare your extended essays with the rubrics given. Try to understand the rubric and have a good discussion with your subject teachers so that you can prepare the best extended essay for each subject.

  • Keep your CAS updated– CAS is essential for personal growth. So, choose your activity according to your interests. Note whatever you learn regularly. Remember to be consistent and don’t leave things for the last moments.
  • Build strong relationships with Teachers– Understanding the teacher well is essential because they are your ultimate guide and inspire you throughout the DP journey. Participate actively in all the class activities, and don’t hesitate to ask questions.
  • Review and reflect over the summer– Before preparing DP 2, you should review content from your previous year. You should check your notes for all the subjects and the documents you have prepared for internal assessments. Do not leave any pending work for DP 2. This will help you to have a stress-free start.
  • Stick to a revision schedule– Revision is an essential part of exam preparation. Do not leave your revision for the last 10 days only. You should aim to finish the syllabus content by February so that you can revise the whole syllabus quickly. You can take help from the past year’s question papers to learn more about the marking scheme. Create a summary sheet for each topic and regularly check your preparation.
  • Finish EE, TOK, and Internal assessment Early– Students must submit their internal assessment assignments, projects, and extended essays in DP 2. You should submit your essays and assignments on time. Choose your topic in DP 1 and start preparing your content very early so that you can edit and take feedback from others.
  • Stay on top of TOK– It’s essential to be deeply involved in the theory of knowledge because it helps you develop a positive mindset. Keep TOK journals and attend TOK sessions to refine your understanding.
  • Take care of your physical and mental health– Your health is essential. You should have a nutritious diet; physical activities are also critical. You can practice a few stress management techniques like mindfulness or breathing exercises.

Be frank with your assignments and tasks given by the subject teachers. Do not copy from websites like Chat GPT or Google. Use these websites to enhance your knowledge and prepare authentic essays and assignments.

Be curious and reflective in your approach to learning– Students should be curious learners. Learning should not be about a year or grade. Choose to become a lifelong learner. Always reflect on what you are learning as a person. Connect yourself with local issues as a Global citizen to inspire students to become sensible and aware Global citizens.
