    IB TOK Tutors Help

When students complete their middle-year program and enter the IB Diploma, they must select subjects according to their career goals. At this point, the thing that fascinates them the most is TOK or the theory of knowledge. Subjects like Maths, Biology, Economics, and Physics are extensions to the subjects students have already studied in previous grades, while IB TOK is unique.
It has no counterpart in any lower-class curriculum, be it IB, IGCSE, or any other. Another fantastic thing about IB Theory of Knowledge (IB TOK) is that it has a syllabus different from other subjects & IB TOK Tutors have yet to offer any new knowledge. You only analyze the knowledge you have already gained. Our IB TOK Tutor takes this fact into account and trains you accordingly. IB TOK is a core subject; passing it is mandatory to earn your IB Diploma. Nowadays, there are two components in IB TOK.

    A) First, you must look at the Titles prescribed by the IB and choose one for yourself. Some titles look pretty straightforward, but crafting a 1600-word essay on them becomes challenging, so be thoughtful while selecting them. After selecting a title, you should find out.

    1. The command terms
    2. The knowledge question (KQ) &
    3. Whether the title focuses on The Core Theme: Knowledge and the Knower

    B) Theory of knowledge mainly deals with the question, “How do we know what we know?” Also, TOK is comparative. You need to select two Areas of Knowledge (AOK) out of the total five areas. These areas are:

    • The Arts
    • History
    • The human sciences
    • Mathematics, and
    • The natural sciences

You should choose two Areas of Knowledge (AOK) to do a comparative study and answer the KQ in your prescribed title. Our IB TOK Tutors can help you to use knowledge framework devices to explore AOKs.
    C) Every word in the prescribed title says something. You must understand that & act accordingly. There can be a direct question in PT, and you can provide arguments to support or oppose it.
If there are words like “in what way” or “up to what extent,” then it indicates that there is a “statement in the Prescribed title,” and you are supposed to produce an argument in favor of or against it.

    How is the Essay Graded:

The IB TOK Essay and IB TOK Exhibition are both marked out of a score of 10. In final grading, the IB TOK Essay contributes 67 of the total marks, and the exhibition contributes 33%. Below are the overall grade boundaries for the entire theory of knowledge.

    Grades Equivalent Marks
    A22-30
    B16-21
    C10-15
    D4-9
    E0-3

Understanding these boundaries is crucial for students aiming to earn the full 3 core points in the combined TOK and Extended Essay (EE) matrix.

Below are the criteria on which the IB TOK Essay is graded:

    • Assessment Objective 1: Understanding knowledge questions
    • Assessment Objective 2: Quality of analysis of knowledge claims

Additionally, there is an assessment of the engagement with the prescribed title.

How to Structure Your IB TOK Essay

Our IB TOK Tutor recommends following the four C strategies to write your IB TOK Essay. Here is the strategy:-

    • Content- Your content must help you understand the knowledge issues.
    • Clarity: You must organize your essay with a clear, coherent structure.
    • Creativity: It must demonstrate how you think & how you understand knowledge issues.
    • Critical Thinking- There must be a counterargument for every argument you make so that you can evaluate the quality of your claims.

We must apply this strategy and write a 1600-word essay. According to the latest IB TOK guidelines, the IB does not set a strict format for each section of the TOK Essay.

    • There is no strict word count for each paragraph. But the most critical parts of the essay (claims, counterclaims, examples, analysis) must receive the necessary word count for depth.
    • You should structure the entire essay within 1600 words.
    • There must be a logical exploration of the prescribed title, presenting arguments, counterarguments, and real-world examples, while clearly connecting to TOK concepts and areas of knowledge.
    • There must be clarity, coherence, and critical thinking in the entire TOK Essay.

Our experienced IB TOK, many of whom have served as official IB examiners, provide first-hand insights into how these criteria are applied in real evaluation scenarios to ensure student success

Below is our recommended word limit for each section.

    SectionRecommended Word Count
    Introduction100-150 words
    First Development (AoK 1)~600 words
    Second Development (AoK 2)~600 words
    Conclusion~250 words
    Total1600 words

While these word counts are recommendations, our tutors ensure your essay maintains the precise balance required to meet the ‘Quality of Analysis’ criteria without exceeding the 1600-word limit.
