I have already written a post on how to score 7 in IB Maths HL. Besides this, many articles and posts on the same topic are available online. But I know many students who spoil their grades because of Paper 2 or Paper 3. Our IB Maths Tutors have written this post, especially about excellently preparing for IB Maths HL Papers 2 and 3.
How to score Seven IB Maths HL Paper 1, 2 and 3-
Papers one and two have the same weight, with 120 marks each (30% of the total). Students should complete both papers within 120 minutes each. Paper 3 carries a 20% weight of 60 marks. No calculators are allowed on paper 1, while students can use a Graphic Display Calculator (GDC) on papers 2 and 3. Still, It is not necessary to use a calculator for every question. Each problem has a different difficulty level, and the weight of each question is mentioned in front of the question.
Sections and Time Limits-
There are two sections with 60 marks each per paper. Section A tests the student’s knowledge and understanding of the syllabus. Section B is intended to test the student’s in-depth knowledge of the core. Almost all the questions in this section show a gradual increase in difficulty. They are accessible initially, but they become difficult as students proceed through them. Paper 3 consists of a small number of compulsory extended-response questions based on an option. Students choose an optional topic for paper three, such as calculus, probability, etc.
Be ready with your calculator and IB Maths HL formula booklet-
Your exam paper indicates which questions allow the use of a calculator and which do not. When you study in your school or with your IB Online Tutors, you should solve a few questions from each paper using your GDC. Remember to set its unit properly, like degrees or radians. You must be familiar with every function of your calculator, such as finding the z value in normal distribution from probability, finding the local minimum and maximum from a graph, finding the intersection between two curves, and solving equations using graphs. Our IB Maths Tutors organize free online workshops to help students with their GDC. You can register with us by commenting on this post.
Don’t ignore the material you don’t understand-
You should never take anything lightly. Every part of the syllabus should be at your fingertips. If you are behind on some topics, you must seek help from IB home tutors or Online Tutors. We can help you with every small thing you need help understanding.
Complete your syllabus as soon as possible so that you get plenty of time to review everything. Do more and more complex questions from outside the book. Practice past year question papers. Contact us for free to get past-year papers and their explanations.
Challenging questions-
It doesn’t matter how well prepared you are or how much practice you have done. You will always find a few questions which are gruelling for you. Don’t get stuck with these questions. Solve the rest of your paper calmly and then get back to them. There must be a way to solve those questions. You can start them. You must at least know the formula to solve them. Start with something, and you will definitely find the solution. Write your answers in the correct form and up to the appropriate number of decimal places. Be clear with graphs and coordinates. Show proper results with your GDC. You can also go through my previous post here-
